Stanislav Shushkevich

President of Belarus (1991-1994)

Stanislav Shushkevich is a Belarusian politician and scientist who served as the first President of Belarus following its independence from the Soviet Union. He personally was one of the signatories of the "Belavezha Accords," the declaration which began the dissolution the USSR. He also unilaterally returned all nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus and initiated democratic and free-market reforms. Shushkevich lectures extensively in foreign universities including in Poland and the United States, and remains active in Belarusian politics despite the difficult current political climate; he is the current head of the Belarusian Social Democratic Assembly party. As a scientist, he is a member of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences, Doctor in Physics and Mathematics, recipient of various state awards, and the author and originator of textbooks and over 150 articles and 50 inventions.
