Bronisław Komorowski is a Polish politician and historian who served as President of Poland from 2010-2015. He served as Minister of Defence from 2000 to 2001, and then as Marshal of the Sejm until 2010. Following the death of President Lech Kaczyński in a plane crash in April of that year, Komorowski ran for President in the resultant election and won. Komorowski studied history at the University of Warsaw, before becoming active in dissident politics. He was detained multiple times by the Communist government during the 1980s, both for underground publishing activity and his work for the Movement for Defense of Human and Civic Rights. He was active in several political movements following the democratisation of Poland, until eventually joining the Civic Platform party in 2001.
