Filip Vujanović is a Montenegrin politician is the third and current President of Montenegro. He assumed the role in 2003, when Montenegro was still in political union with Serbia, and oversaw his country's transition to an independent state in 2006. An Interior and Justice Minister prior to independence, before becoming Speaker of the Parliament. Initially assuming the position of President due to the resignation of his predecessor, he went on to win three presidential elections. Vujanović has steered Montenegro through its independence referendum as well as NATO and EU accession negotiations, and has normalised relations with Serbia. A lawyer by training, Vujanović graduated from the University of Belgrade and worked in law until joining the Democratic Party of Socialists in 1993, following the break-up of Yugoslavia.
