Giorgi Margvelashvili is a Georgian academic and politician who has been President of Georgia since November 2013. He is a political independent and was nominated as presidential candidate by the Georgian Dream coalition. His inauguration saw the introduction of a new constitution which devolved significant power from the President to the Prime Minister. Previously, he served as Minister of Education, where he oversaw the provision of free textbooks to over 650,000 school pupils. Prior to entering politics, Dr. Margvelashvili was the rector of the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs from 2000-2012, as well as an advisor to the Georgian Foundation for Democracy and Development. An academic, he studied philosophy to doctoral level in Tbilisi and Budapest, receiving a PhD from Tbilisi State University in 1998.
