Ilham Aliyev is the President of Azerbaijan and the leader of the New Azerbaijan Party, a position he has held since 2003. He is also the head of the Azerbaijan Olympic Committee, and was formerly Vice-President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan. Aliyev is the son of Heydar Aliyev, who was President of Azerbaijan from 1993-2003, when he stepped down.  In 1977, Aliyev entered the Moscow State Institute of International Relations continued his education as a postgraduate. In 1985 he received a PhD in history.
