James "Jim" Bolger served as the Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1990-1997. A member of the National Party, he was elected on the promise of delivering a "Decent Society" following the previous Labour government's economic reforms. A Member of Parliament from 1972 onwards, he served in several ministerial positions before rising to the leadership of his party, and subsequently won a landslide victory at the 1990 elections. He retired from politics in 1998 and was subsequently named as New Zealand's ambassador to the USA. He has served as Chancellor of Waikato University and Chair of KiwiRail. From a rural background, Bolger began his career through agricultural politics.
