Lothar de Mazière
Lothar de Mazière is a German politician who served as the only democratically-elected Prime Minister of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). A longtime member of the East German Christian Democratic Union, de Maizière helped oust the party's pro-Communist leadership after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and oversaw the dissolution of the state and reunification with the rest of Germany. After German reunification, he was appointed Minister for Special Affairs in the CDU government of Helmut Kohl, until his resignation in 1990. De Mazière initially studied music, and played in the Berlin Symphony Orchestra before studying law and entering politics.
