Shaukat Aziz is a Pakistani economist and politician who served as Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2004-2007, as well as its Finance Minister from 1999-2007. Aziz, who previously had a successful career in finance and banking in the United States, returned to Pakistan to assume the position of Finance Minister after a personal request by President Musharraf. His particularly successful macroeconomic policies led to a nomination for the Prime Ministership, which he subsequently won in the 2004 elections. Under his tenure, Pakistan experienced unprecedented growth and poverty reduction. He has since returned to business, and is also a respected commentator on economics - particularly since the global financial crisis. Aziz graduated with an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration in Karachi in 1969, from where he joined Citibank as an intern and rose up through the company.
