Rexhep Meidani is an Albanian politician and academic who served as President of Albania from 1997-2002 and former Secretary-General of the Albanian Socialist Party. His political career began in the 1990s. He was the chair of the Central Election Commission during the first multi-party elections in 1991 and member of the Presidential Council. In the early 1990s he was also Chair of the Albanian Centre of Human Rights. In 1997 he was elected as President after a Socialist-led coalition won the general election. Dr. Meidani holds PhDs from University of Paris XI and the University of Tirana, where he also taught in the faculty of natural sciences for thirty years. He is widely regarded as one of Albania's leading academics.
